Honored as this year’s artist-in-residence at the Country
Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Kenny Rogers is an apt choice to mark the
program’s 10th anniversary — he’s a certified mega-platinum all-purpose
icon for our time. The Houston native has always had a canny feel for
the market, and made waves singing the psychedelic pop of Mickey
Newbury’s “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In),”
a 1967 smash for The First Edition. Rogers and The First Edition took
“Reuben James” to the top of the charts in 1969, and Rogers went on to
become an avatar of the slick pop-country that began to hit airwaves in
the ’70s and early ’80s. You’ve certainly heard — and enjoyed — such
classics as “Daytime Friends,” “Lucille,” and something titled “The
Gambler.” Rogers is a singer who has proven his ease with everything
he’s touched.
